The Episcopal school recently sent a 12-page guide to students and staff recommending using the terms “grown-ups,” “folks,” “family,” or “guardians,” instead of terms “mom,” “dad,” and “parents.”Their suggestions are fraught with so many problems...
- "Grown-up" implies that others are inferior, immature, childish and irresponsible. It also implies others have smaller physical stature and is implicitly mocking their small size. Nope. Cannot have that.
- "Folks" is obviously too folksy. It is condemning people who aren't folksy, come from urban settings, and don't tell folk stories or have folk traditions. Nope. Out of the question.
- "Family" would be perceived as hateful and hurtful by those who do not have families. Forget it.
- "Guardians" is stern, harsh, suggesting of force controlling weaker people or of ownership of inferior people. Out of the question!
Clearly the best thing we can do is eliminate all spoken and written language.

My LEAST favorite Obama cringe-word.
