Since its start in 1974, with Jack Nicklaus' historic victory over J.C. Snead, THE PLAYERS Championship has been one of the PGA TOUR's most coveted titles. After winning the inaugural event, Nicklaus would go on to win the title every other year until 1978. Nicklaus remains the only three-time winner of THE PLAYERS.
Could Charles Howell III finally win a big tournament? Talk about one of the better players never to win a big one.
We used to have pools back in the day where you got the money your picks won.
I want to see DeChambeau drive over the water at 18. He’s thinking about it.
I can predict that Henrik Stenson is out of it, Phil is safe.
Sounds like gambling :)
Charles Smith
18 is 468 yards. He can bite some off, but not all of it.
(1) Jack Nicklaus never won at the Sawgrass Stadium Course, where the tournament has been played for the last 40 years.
(2) The Players Championship has the largest purse of any golf tournament in the world. I believe that prize record goes back several decades, but I cannot find an exact listing to verify that.
Who is going to win?
Bryson DeChambeau and his 370 yard drives are pretty cool.
But, can he putt?
Speaking of long drives - two decades ago, Tiger Woods became a legend by consistently hitting in the 300 yard range!
You don't need to be a long driver to win here, shot making can win it. But typically it's "big" names. Although the whole field is "big" names :)
He has won eight times on the PGA Tour, including one major, the 2020 US Open. He's ranked #6 worldwide.
He won this last week at the Arnold Palmer Invitational with a 40 foot putt on the 4th, a 50 foot putt on the 11th and a 5 foot putt on 18 to win. It was his 3rd win in the last 9 months.
You can't win consistently on the Tour without being able to putt.
I think that answers your question.
I’m hoping Ricky Fowler or Jordan Spieth show up and do something or maybe Lee Westwood. All three are long shots except for Spieth.
Spieth and Westwood are in the groove, golf is streaky. Fowler is not in the groove, Victor Hovland is.
Sergio out with 65, he likes this course, but can he hold up...
