Interestingly enough, S.C began as a colony of Barbados! The island of Barbados became one huge slavery driven industry of sugar cane. They looked North for hardwood (having no trees left standing on the island). They experimented with sugar cane in S.C. without success. They turned to tobacco there and the rest is history.......

South Carolina was a colony created and financed by the “Lord Proprietors”, having no ties to Barbados.

Sugar cane farming was attempted but largely failed. Prior to this failure, rice was grown in large amounts and later tobacco was introduced from Virginia and North Carolina.

You must be confusing SC with Georgia.
