"It's the beginning of the month and for many Americans, rent is due as fears of an eviction crisis looms. A federal eviction moratorium expires at the end of the month, and those who owe back rent could be forced out of their homes. Jericka Duncan spoke to a New York City renter who owes nearly $20,000 in back rent. Duncan reports on those who are struggling to make payments."

THE COVID-19 EVICTION CRISIS: AN ESTIMATED 30-40 MILLION PEOPLE IN AMERICA ARE AT RISK
1 Introduction
"The United States may be facing the most severe housing crisis in its history. According to the latest analysis of weekly U.S. Census data, as federal, state and local protections and resources expire and in the absence of robust and swift intervention, an estimated 30–40 million people in America could be at risk of eviction in the next several months. Many property owners, who lack the credit or financial ability to cover rental payment arrears, will struggle to pay their mortgages and property taxes, and maintain properties. The COVID-19 housing crisis has sharply increased the risk of foreclosure and bankruptcy, especially among small property owners; long-term harm to renter families and individuals; disruption of the affordable housing market; and destabilization of communities across the United States."

Biden extends COVID moratorium on foreclosures as homeowners struggle with pandemic downturn
Dave Goldiner, Chris Sommerfeldt 2/17/2021
"While waiting on Congress to pass his coronavirus stimulus plan, President Biden on Tuesday extended a couple of federal efforts that aim to help Americans stay in their homes amid a deepening housing crisis exacerbated by the economic fallout from the pandemic.
The first action extends a federal moratorium on foreclosures through June 30, barring banks and other lenders from repossessing homes from owners falling behind on loans. The second action extends the enrollment window for a federal mortgage forbearance program, also until June 30, that can lower and delay monthly payments.
The foreclosure and forbearance programs were both set to expire March 31."

Texas judge rules federal eviction moratorium unconstitutional. Lawyers and advocates disagree on what that means for tenants.
