That's a baloney story. Unless they're talking about the S&W model 52 (a pretty rare handgun), the 38 special is typically a revolver. Maybe, maybe, a single round could cook off and discharge.

But that's the only round that could possibly exit the barrel.

But the other rounds would have to cook off, too. Thus exploding in the cylinder. Thus rendering the gun inoperable.

I don't buy it. The story stinks.

The story didn't claim it was 38 Special.

There is a 38 Super that is a pistol.

Came here to say the same thing. LIES. No way a .38 revolver advanced the cylinder by itself.
