Actually for the first 2 hours the audience fully expects that the Manson klan of Leftists WILL enter the house and kill the guests.

Tarentino flipped the audience expectation and gave us a happy ending.

Quite a few films begin with “Once Upon A Time” including the Westerns and Star Wars but also the French Beauty and Beast long before that. And filmmakers build off of the traditions of others. Cocteau’s Beauty and The Beast begins with a preamble (as does Star Wars and Tarentino puts the line in the title of his movie):

“Children believe what we tell them. They have complete faith in us. They believe that a rose plucked from a garden can plunge a family into conflict. They believe that the hands of a human beast will smoke when he slays a victim, and that this will cause him shame when a young maiden takes up residence in his home. They believe a thousand other simple things.
I ask of you a little of this childlike sympathy and, to bring us luck, let me speak four truly magic words, childhood’s ‘Open Sesame’: ‘Once upon a time...’”

Tarentino makes it quite clear with the end message.

He’s in a lot of solid flicks.
He did a good job in all of his movies that I’ve seen.

I never had that fantasy. They got much worse than getting their butts kicked, most spent the rest of their lives in the joint, same nasty place Manson died. I’d much rather get my butt kicked than get what they got.

I was riffing on that.

His character in the movie is Ed.

The Real Don Steele - Once Upon a Time in Hollywood - Radio Aircheck May 25, 1968

“The Real Don Steele show which was used on Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. See if you notice all the songs, voice-overs, and ads used!”

Well, the fantasy is that they were thwarted in their crime. That was satisfying on a visceral, superficial level, even though we know how it really ends.

I guess what I am saying is that movies can make you really fall in love with the girl, hate the villain, cheer for the hero, even though none of it is real. Movies and reality are two separate and distinct things. Everyone know this, yet we (or some of us anyway) fall for it every time.

I feel very fortunate to have seen Once Upon a Time in Hollywood in a theater and without having any clue it would end the way it did. Tarantino is a genius.

I like how the one where the Manson murders did not happen shone a light on Sharon Tate

It’s more of a cameo, he welcomes Dr King and Django with an offer of cake and coffee as they bring in some dead bounties

Yes, that was my reference point.

Bruce Willis says Zed is dead. I was using that as a reference to Ed in the Hateful Eight.
