“Unprecedented,” say experts. Look at the number of earthquakes in the last 48 hours!
Southwestern Iceland was rocked by a series of earthquakes Wednesday. According to geological experts, the epicenter of the main quake was located near Mt. Keilir, roughly 30 km (19 miles) south of the capital Reykjavik.
Experts say shocks from the quake, which registered 5.7 in magnitude, sparked increased volcanic activity, triggering a number of aftershocks registering over 4.0 for hours after the initial quake hit.
“I’ve never experienced or felt so many strong earthquakes in such a short period of time. It’s unusual,” Icelandic Meteorological Office’s (IMO) earthquake hazards coordinator Kristin Jonsdottir told Icelandic public broadcaster RUV.
Experts are used to intense geothermal activity in Iceland but say the amount of rumbling at the moment is unprecedented
Though the region has yet to experience eruptions as a result of the increased activity, the IMO nevertheless raised aviation warnings from green to yellow over the Krysuvik volcano system.
The last eruption to occur in the area was in the 12th century but more recently, the eruption of Iceland’s more southerly Eyjafjallajokull volcano over six days in 2010 caused massive disruption to international air travel, affecting as many as 10 million travelers.
The Reykjanes peninsula, located on a tectonic fault, has been rocked by numerous earthquakes for more than a year.

Took a trip to Hawaii in the 90’s. Went to see eruption on the coast of Kilauea with my kids, hired a private car and tour guide.
We were on the southeast coast and the guide was telling us how awful it was. No jobs in the area. I noticed a bunch of bumper stickers with a Rocket and a slash through it “No Rockets”. I asked him what it meant.
He said there was a proposal to build a rocket launch facility that would make Hawaii the Cape Kennedy of the Pacific rim. There would be a number of rocket launches. Associated high tech industries to build and supply the space port. Collateral jobs for the locals in food, beverage, hotels etc etc etc.
Many were opposed to the rocket launches because they were “concerned about the pollution associated with the launches.”
I just laughed. “ Let me great this straight, you are opposed to a few rocket launces, and yet the VOLCANO HAS BEEN ERUPTING CONTINOUSLY SINCE 1985 putting millions of tons of CO2, suffer dioxide, particulates and god only knows what else into the atmosphere?’
Dude just stared at me. At that point they deserved to be poor and unemployed.

Most volcanos spew out sulfur dioxide and particulates that result in global cooling.

I, for one, want to eschew digging 5,280 ft. of snow and ice from my driveway.
Another reason for Texas to make their electrical generation robust to -10F temperatures!
Thanks, I was thinking of CO2, but sulfur dioxide has the greater cooling effect.
Volcanoes don’t put out a lot of CO2.
