I have no idea what it was. But, I know what it wasn’t: One of ours. Experimental military aircraft fly in very specific places, and times and altitudes positioned well from civilian aviation routes. They do this for a variety of reasons not the least of which is they don’t want to hit anything. Imagine the crap-storm if a civilian airliner was clipped by a Skunkworks plane.

I think a more reasonable and rational explanation in the absence of more detail is smugglers. That would also explain why it’s the FBI investigating and not the Air Force.
