A dad-to-be in upstate New York was killed when a device he was building for a gender reveal party exploded, state police said Monday.

Christopher Pekny, 28, was working on the device for his child’s gender reveal party in the Catskills town of Liberty when it blew up just before noon on Sunday, cops said.

The blast killed Pekny and injured his brother, 27-year-old Michael Pekny, who was treated for his injuries at the Garnet Medical Center in Middletown, according to police.

Have any of you ever been to Liberty, NY?

I have, and not a place one wants to visit twice.

The inhabitants I encountered made Massholes seem nice.

It’s best not to use nitroglycerin as a party popper.

Now I am thinking about having my own gender reveal party - get drunk, and show everyone my penis.

It will be like all my other parties, except I’ll be less likely to be arrested/prosecuted, if I’ve got a politically correct cover story.

what the hell is wrong with people? Those parties are just a waste of time and money.
Just tell your family when the time is right.

I think all this ridiculous crap started with all the ‘reality’ tv shows, average people getting their 15 min of fame by acting ridiculous on tv. Now everybody wants attention. It’s creepy and pathetic. I don’t go to weddings anymore, they have become ridiculous.

My daughter and her husband had one of these stupid parties (nobody died) when they were visiting the husband’s family half the country away from us. I was glad they did it there because it meant I didn’t have to go, and I preferred to find out in a phone call.

No, I have never been to Liberty, but I see that they have a reasonable crime rate, unemployment is low, the scenery is beautiful and you Can buy a cute little house for under $100,000. It just needs a little work on the steps from the street so the mailman won't trip.

Looks like a friendlier bunch than you might meet in a lot of places... maybe you were just hanging out in the red light district and formed a bad impression?

Not seeing the inside but I’ll be that house needs another $100K just to make it habitable.

I was helping set up for a stage of the Empire State International Rally.

In all of the other rallies I have volunteered for, the locals loved it.

A couple days of free entertainment from a world class racing event.

Not in Liberty.

I imagine the chamber of commerce and businesses loved it, as rally brings in a LOT of money, wherever it is.

The Chamber in Maine, where the New England Forest Rally is, estimates about three million dollars for each event into the local economy.

What we encountered was probably welfare types through middle income types throwing stuff at us, yelling crap at us, etc.

In the area nearby, we had to shut down stages as richer locals were pissed that their road(s) were closed for an hour or two, and were driving on the stage. Not a good idea, when every minute, there is a rally car coming down the road at up to 130 MPH.

Luckily, the local judge is a rally fan, it's his party day on a good corner of a stage.

There were quite a few arrests.

I have never seen this behavior at any other rally in the northeast in over 25 years of volunteering for them.

There's a reason why that house is so cheap. Location, location, location.

BTW, I am basing this on what I saw roughly 20 years ago.

A lot can change in 20 years, good or bad.

Don’t keep us in suspense. Is it a boy or a girl?

I think we have to wait for the autopsy now.

We are just finishing a long ordeal fixing up a 120 year old house, so I hear you. But the pictures of the inside of this house on Zillow don't make it look like there is a lot of repairs needed The value issue that it has... is that it is in a rural area in New York. My wife looks at a website daily called oldhousedreams.com. Rural New York has houses that are incredible values all the time. Sometimes people are asking $50,000 for a house that has property taxes that are $10,000 a year; people just choose to walk away. Rural New York has what are turning into ghost towns because of high taxes and the state government.
