Small businesses, including hair salons, have been hit hard in the Pacific Northwest over the past year thanks to stringent government restrictions. To make matters worse, leaders of blue states have become infamous for encouraging the public to snitch on these small businesses that are doing their best to stay afloat in a tanking economy. However, a recent encounter at an Oregon hair salon leads me to wonder if small businesses will begin snitching on customers next.
Two weeks ago, I visited a beauty school and hair salon in the Portland suburb of Hillsboro, Oregon. Little did I know I would be kicked out only minutes after I arrived because I voiced reservations about the intrusive three-page COVID-related questionnaire I was required to fill out prior to my appointment.
It was my first visit to the establishment, and when I stepped inside, a pink-haired receptionist with rhinestone-studded cheekbones took my temperature and handed me the questionnaire. I dutifully answered the 15 questions on page one pertaining to any physical symptoms I may be experiencing. Then I turned to page two, stopping abruptly when I read the first questions:
"Did you take part in a social gathering of more than 10 people in the last week in which you were within 6 feet of others?" followed by "If yes, was everyone wearing a mask/face covering, you included?"
SNIP
"I understand that. But tell me this: if I answer yes to either of these questions, can I still get my hair cut?"
She reiterated, "As a private business we have the right to ask these questions." She paused and followed up more boldly this time with "that is called capitalism."

I can’t say the fake name I use because it is the same name I use on Twitter. ‘Course, I only use my twitter account when someone here links to something in twitter.
Ditto. If I need something from them, I'll say whatever I need to, but if they're going to poke their nose into something that is none of their business I am under no obligation to be truthful. I will be the sole and final arbiter on what part or parts of my life is in fact their business.
Back in December I got a routine physical. Did the "routine" background questions on health and such. I don't lie in terms of exercise, diet, alcohol use - they can't give me a good professional opinion if they don't have accurate information. However, for the first time ever there were questions about firearms in the home and if I felt safe in my home etc. I wanted to say yes there are multiple loaded firearms in my home, that's why I feel safe there. But I didn't - it is none of their business and not necessary information for them to do their job. So I lied on the questionnaire - without reservation or guilt. In fact I had forgotten all about it until I read this.
I like my doc, I intend to continue to see him. I don't think he really cares about firearms. I think the practice is being forced to ask. It would probably be the same anywhere I went. So I'll go, and I'll just keep that part of my life private. It is not necessary for him to tell me if my cholesteral, weight, and blood pressure are ok. That's all I want or need from my doc - not any input/opinion on personal physical security.
Thanks, that is an interesting story.
If ‘we’ (Conservatives) keep thinking like that...
...we’ll be left wondering why FreeRepublic isn’t online anymore.
The IOW footnote should be patently obvious.
To quote a movie: It’s [PAST] time to NOT be nice.
Anything else just emboldens them.
Only businesses which behave like this.

She should have demanded to know each and every person the stylist slept with over the past 5 years. Why should anyone take the risk of catching HIV/AIDS or Hepatitis from a potentially degenerate stylist.
I prefer Jack Hoff.
And let’s not forget Heywood Jablowme.
Note to small businesses everywhere: Most of you have refused to fight for your own livelihoods, have been ratting on each other and on your customers.
Guess what?
I don’t need a mask to shop on Amazon.
Go broke with my blessing.
If you come onto my property and request a service I have the right to ask you pretty much anything I like.
You have the right to refuse to answer but that refusal may have consequences.
Appears have a name and phone number determined so you just provide it naturally. It’s fun. Get what you need from them however you have to. And seek out businesses that actually support your cause.
4. “Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules.” If the rule is that every letter gets a reply, send 30,000 letters. You can kill them with this because no one can possibly obey all of their own rules.
Yeah, and you get to go broke when we shop elsewhere. You do you, boo.
Yep, could be.
Ain't capitalism great?
My medical office has all the standard questions. I add to the list and inform them that my butt itches.
Have a questionnaire asking for "real biological sex" or "have you ever had an abortion?" (not in the context of a medical visit) and get back to us about how that goes.
We have a hairdresser who visits our house.
