I read about a man up near Abilene, TX who froze to death in his recliner. His wife who was found by his side is barely alive. What happened? Were they living far away from neighbors? Did no one care to check on them? No neighbors, family, church members, pastor, priest, friends? I'd like to think we can learn something from such tragedies. When God called out Cain about his brother Abel, what did insolent Cain say to the Lord? "Am I my brother's keeper?" What is the answer to that question? Some of us live right next store to neighbors we don't even know, myself included. Here I say to myself, have a care.
He certainly was not welcoming. Foolish.
When people were looking at the house for sale on my block, I came outside to “work in my garden” and made sure to be open to conversation if the lookers wanted it. Ended up “recruiting” a couple who weren’t sure; they have turned out to be great neighbors.
I used to greet new neighbors with home baked goodies. Everyone was so happy to meet me and were nice to me. But one woman insulted me and slammed the door. It’s good to know the neighbors, especially the dangerous ones so I could warn my children to avoid them.
One neighbor made homemade blueberry muffins and brought them over. Very sweet. Unfortunately, they moved a few years later.
