That said, leaving out the Hunt For Red October quote is a mistake. Not the least because Clancy himself was a quasi-Genius. I say that because in reading through his books he clearly knew more about just about every field than I did with the probable exceptions of Theology, Philosophy, and Economics, where he talked a good game but was actually in over his head-—FWIW those are the three fields I hold degrees in, so I suspect he has other flaws I can’t detect.

I’ll listen with interest to such people, but in the end I’m not drawing any conclusions.

A radio host that I used to listen to in Baltimore asked the following question:

Pick any newspaper story concerning a topic about which you have some minimal level of expertise. Note all the factual errors in incorrect conclusions. Now zoom out to all the other stories concerning topics about which you do not have any particular insights. Then ask yourself, “How much can I rely on anything that I’m reading?”
