Douglass fell short of calling Lincoln “an Abolition President.” In fact, due to Lincoln’s resistance to dissolving the Union, Douglass referred to the new president rhetorically as “the Abolition movement[’s] … most powerful enemy.”
Lincoln _was_ an abolitionist. But his first priority was in keeping the United States together, as it should have been.

Frederick Douglass taught himself how to read, recognizing in his earliest years that education could be “the pathway from slavery to freedom.” Some think that Democrats have ruined inner-city schools because they are incompetent. It’s because like there antebellum forebearers, they are racist as hell.
