Rush reminds me of Dream Theater, another pretentious prog-rock band, in that the individual musicians are talented with their instruments (Geddy Lee’s high pitched voice is annoying, but he can carry a tune), but as a united band they’re all competing with each other and it sounds...discordant. Except for “The Temples of Syrinx” from their 2112 album. For some reason, I like that song.

I’m not a big Dream theatre fan but John Petrucci’s solo albums are another level of awesome.

Nothing wrong with showcasing virtuosity in music. The verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus-out in 4/4 time is rather bland at times.

Also, the only one that is pretentious is the critic analyzing a subjective art form.
