While the British variant is more contagious, the variant from South Africa appears to some extent to blunt the effectiveness of existing vaccines, according to limited, early
data. Emergence of similarly threatening homegrown variants could compound the challenge, but knowledge about mutations within the U.S. remains woefully limited as the country has sequenced genomes from less than 1% of all coronavirus samples.

Just like all other flu variants, it keeps changing. It will be used as an excuse to keep the mask mandate and travel restrictions forever, vaccine or not.

One vaccine per variant forever—call it the “jab of the week” program, yup, that is a _great_ plan!

"If you were to ask me right now, what's most concerning of all the things that I've heard so far, it's the fact that they are reporting a sudden increase in cases in Manaus, Brazil," virus expert Jeremy Luban at the University of Massachusetts told NPR two weeks ago before the variant arrived in the United States. "Manaus already had 75% of people infected [in the spring of last year]."The concern with P.1 is twofold: Scientists don't understand why the variant has spread so explosively in Brazil, and the variant carries a particularly dangerous set of mutations.
This is the one that will cause ADE IMO. Neutralizing antibodies from previous infections and vaccinations will not bind to this variant properly leading to the potential for antibody dependent enhancement of the virus in alveolar macrophage ACE 2 receptors.

So is the current vaccine going to be like flu shots, not effect because it was “engineered” for last year’s model and the new model is different?

Sometimes I miss the days when techniques of virology weren’t developed to the point of being able to detect every minuscule and irrelevant variation in a virus. Ignorance isn’t necessarily bliss, but vast knowledge of minor details can definitely cause needless worry.
