AP reported Lincoln Project leaders were informed in writing and phone calls of
at least 10 specific allegations of harassment against Weaver as early as last June.

But they were srill raising money hand over fist.

The group raised more than $90 million, and more than half of that
was spent on consulting companies owned by the group’s founders.

I think that was what finally sent the NY Times on the warpath. They did their job (while being protected by the media)...helping to drive out Trump, but the NY Times wanted to send a message to other people thinking of trying the same stunt - you will pay for it.
