Over thirty years ago, Alan Bloom predicted the cancel culture tearing America apart today.
The English faculty at Leicester University recently decided to expunge works such as Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and Beowulf from their curriculum. They hoped that removing classical “Western” works from their curriculum would attract more students. That decision accentuates a trend that has been underway in American colleges, too: Eliminating course that many students claim glorify western imperialism, capitalism, and chauvinism. The students, and often faculty, demand colleges take down portraits and statues as well. The University of Pennsylvania removed a portrait of Shakespeare that had graced the walls for years. Not to be outdone, the San Francisco Board of Education removed Abraham Lincoln’s name from a public school.

Bloom argued that American students have become impoverished in the soul because they no longer engage with the classics of Western Civilization. The Great Books program presents writings from influential authors regardless of whether their views are radical, liberal, conservative, atheistic, or theistic. The editors trust that, with open liberal education, students will have the ability to make educated decisions on what is right and what is wrong. That is the heart of liberal education. The slogan is “Let the great conversation take place.”
Radical students of the 1960s did not subscribe to that commitment. Because they were sure that their revolutionary Marxian, Freudian, Nietzschean, and Darwinian views contained all truth, they sought to cancel any other views, especially religious views. They directly assaulted traditional American values of God, family, and nation. They treated with disdain anything related to traditional Christian morality.

Before they can build the “new” system they have to tear down the old one. There can be nothing that people can try to go back to.
I read that book many years ago.
Now that time of 1980s looks like our Golden Era.
I was recently told by a idiot that fascism is bringing religious views into politics. Of course he will also maintain that fascism is all sorts of other stuff he doesn’t like but it’s a cartoony mindset, a Just-Us vs justice, that rules and there’s more than a bit of the old sexual revolution tirade that just suggesting people have good morals is fascistic.
What can you even do with such people?
I think that long term, they wish to erase all memory of slavery. They will do this under the guise of sparing the feelings of those whose ancestors were slaves. And then, having a generation that knows nothing of slavery, and more importantly, that one could be freed, can the more easily be made slaves again. That generation will be taught that the ownership of humans is the norm, and tough luck if your birth represents the drawing of the short straw. There will be no social mobility. No deviation from your station.
I read Bloom's book when it came out years ago and wondered if it could really be true. Boy, was I wrong.
BTW, in addition to collapsing the old system of education, thinking, and living, the Left is also planning to collapse the economy...which is why Joe is destroying jobs as quickly as possible.
After everything is collapsed, the government will assume absolute power.
Sheesh. If people can’t see that we’re being taken over by commies, that’s too bad.
The goal is to eliminate Western Civilization. They just seek to accomplish their goal by different means, but they all agree on the desired end result.

The Left is basically made up of termites, eating away at the foundation of our republic.
“What can you even do with such people?”
Cancel them from your life.
Long term the only solution is separation. How to do that is the 64k question.
Yeah well it appears that about half of them volunteer for closing of the mind now days.
