After VW chose the name “Touareg” for its SUV they were attacked for being racially insensitive. (Or, some such blather.) Touareg means “Free Folk.” I suppose they thought that somebody calling themselves free folk and being black and Muslim would be a big winner with the liberals who buy VW’s. The attack took them by surprise. (Turns out the Touareg were slave holders among other things.) The German CEO had the right response as he said something along the lines of pi$$ off. (Presumably he said it in German which sounds a lot meaner than in English.) I think the “controversy” died then as I never heard another word. And, I think that’s the correct answer every time for everybody. If that was always the answer, rather than the stumbling apologies, cancel culture would die. And while he may have said that, Touareg is no longer a VW nameplate. That space in the model lineup is now occupied by the Atlas, the mountains from which the Touareg hail.
I thought the VW Touareg whas initially chosen because they were a tough, nomadic people who could survive the deserts of north Africa, and the name was dropped after the Touareg people got involved in running weapons to the terrorists in Libya?
