The musical, which first bowed in 1951, was an instant smash, winning Tonys for best musical, best actress, and best actor for Yul Brynner, who catapulted to Hollywood fame. Paramount Pictures is whistling a happy tune as it prepares to set forth on new feature take on Rodgers & Hammerstein’s The King and I.

I was a nine year old girl when the Deborah Kerr/Yul Brynner “King and I” movie was released. I loved that movie, and most of the Rogers & Hammerstein musicals that were turned into films. Had most of the soundtracks too.

Thanks for the link!! I was a 9 year old girl when I saw that in the theater, and fell in love with the movie...and Yul Brynner.

Yeah, watching it as a 9 year old girl, and watching it now as a 74 year old woman, makes a big difference. Seeing it again brought tears to my eyes. When the movie and the stars were nominated for Academy Awards, I asked my mother to wake me up if Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr won. Yul Brynner won for best actor that night, and as promised, my mother woke me up so I could see it.

My parents went to see the play. When they stated how many children he had, my father yelled “He had help!”. My mother said she wanted to crawl under her seat. LOL
