Was diving there in 1970. The town covered about 4 square blocks at most. However they had just built several hotels north of the town. Apparently Jackie Onassis stopped there a year or two before. Actually they have a long history of attempting to attract tourists. They were an important chicle port in the late 19th century and by the 1920s had several hotels catering to Americans who had heard of the "exotic" destinations from friends visiting for work. Synthetic chicle killed the trade. Tourism picked up in the 50s and 60s a bit thanks to the diving and remoteless and a few US magazine articles. But cruises certainly created a boom for them.

With direct flights from more places in the US, it would make sense.

Been there several times. First and best was in the 70's. Fairly primitive. Beautiful water.

I like Cozumel because its off the mainland so not much cartel related violence. Fun thing to do is to rent scooters and do a trip around the island.

I used to go to Cozumel every year for Christmas back in the 80's.

To many hurricanes for a cruise port?
