Lincoln did not attack "the South" at all until after Jefferson Davis attacked US troops in Fort Sumter, forcing them to surrender, and after the Confederacy formally declared war against the United States (May 6, 1861).
Even then, during the civil war's first year, more battles were fought in Union states & territories than in the Confederacy, and more Confederate soldiers died in the Union that year than in the Confederacy.
It began as a War of Southern Aggression against the United States.

And yet again, that's just pure Democrat psychological projection.
Unlike President Trump, President Lincoln was legally able to replace virtually the entire Washington, DC, bureaucracy with loyal Republicans -- or at least men he hoped would be loyal, not all proved to be.
It's a reason ousted Democrat bureaucrats were so eager to find a new government (in Montgomery or Richmond) they could latch onto.
After the Civil War they changed the laws to prevent future presidents (like Donald Trump) from increasing unemployment among Democrat bureaucrats. ![]()

Today I have family scattered all over the South, from Texas to Florida and up to Virginia & Maryland.
Some of them even agree with you, though most do not.
My Dad's family are Pennsylvanians and between the two families have served in every major US war since the Revolutionary War.
We have suffered injury & capture, but also have enjoyed the fruits of victory and peace.
We are the United States, we are sworn to "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

That's nonsense, but in 1787 Southerners were successful in getting their "property" officially recognized in the new Constitution as 3/5 of citizen voters, and that recognition resulted in vast, vast overrepresentation of Southern slaveholders in Washington, DC.
Even in the 1850s, when Northerners began to outnumber Southerners by huge ratios, Southern Democrats were still overrepresented enough to keep control of the national Democrat party, both Houses of Congress, the US Supreme Court, the Washington, DC, bureaucracy and through doughfaced Northern Democrats like Franklin Pierce and James Buchanan, the presidency.
Until the election of 1860 Southern Democrats ruled everything in Washington, and felt no need to declare secession.
After the 1860 election they knew they'd be out of power and that drove them berserk with fear & anger, so many declared their secession from the United States.
Soon after, they formally declared war against the United States and began invading Union states & territories.

You are a berserker Southern Democrat and the Democrats' job since 1787 has been to teach their children to hate the United States and seek its destruction.
Republicans' (former Federalists & Whigs) job has been to humor you berserkers while preventing the worst of your insanities (i.e., slavery & socialism) and, yes, holding the country together.

One of my great-grandfathers served in the western theater, from Vicksburg throughout (including Nashville) and ending finally at Fort Blakely near Mobile.
His regiment were not great soldiers, certainly in the beginning, but by war's end they were as solid as any.
