For those of you who don't live in Minnesota, here's a quick look at our handgun permitting differences.
Permit To Purchase. You'll need one of these to purchase a handgun in the state of Minnesota. Good for evil black rifles, as well. Forms are obtained at your local Police Department (not County Sheriff). Usually takes less than 5 days to approve or deny. If he did get a permit to purchase, he lied on the form when asked about his drug use. He would have had to also lie on the federal form when he took possession of the handgun.
IF he purchased the gun from an FFL, which I'm skeptical about, for now.
This permit is good for one year and you may purchase as many handguns as you wish during that year.
The carry permit gets a bit more scrutiny and can take up to 30 days to be approved. It usually does. Trust me. This permit application is handled by your county's Sheriff.
This part is interesting: "Police Chief Pat Butke tells KARE 11 News he is trying to make private gun permit data for Ulrich public through a court order, which would help explain unanswered questions about how he had a gun after a probation agent highly recommended Ulrich not be allowed to own one."
In other words, the Police Chief has no idea if his office issued a permit to purchase or not. So, basically, he's investigating himself.
Could be nothing. Could be really embarrassing!
The gun permit thing is the least of this guy’s worries.
When I was President of our home owner’s association in Burnsville (a suburb of the Twin Cities) the Police department would send us a report every month of criminal incidents and gun purchases in our condominium complex.
I appreciated the crime report, but never quite understood why it was any of our business about gun purchases.
