I’m reminded of the old rule: “The system you really want always costs $5,000.”

I used to use this exact system at work. With DOS, 640K really was enough for anybody. :)

Who would ever need more?

Unless you ran Autocad or some REALLY big Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheets.

Also, on the 8086, drivers often wound up eating into main memory. TSR programs like Sidekick used even more.

Even with today's tablets and smartphones and PCs, 640k might be enough.

Most people can only do one app at a time, and most apps don't really do much more than present on the screen stuff that's really done on the cloud.

And, loading up a tablet or smartphone with apps, just because 'they are there', makes on sense either.

Except the CIA/FBI/NSA/DoD/DHS who need the extra RAM to run their spyware to keep tabs on counter-revolutionaries that voted for Trump ...

And you could get Extended or expanded memory. Oracle first came out running in the extended memory partition. I paid $500 for 2 meg hardwired memory board for the IBM machine. Mine was a clone so i had to melt the chips off and put them on an extended memory card. Ran real slow but i had a full blown oracle database running on the machine.

We bought and networked several of these at the office. Once we had all we needed I recall them being about $4500 a piece.

re. 640K

But if it wasn't you could get an expanded memory board. Picked up an Intel Above-Board with 512K one time, then spent hour after hour tweaking extended memory settings in DOS.
