When I was in grad school, I had a chance to hear Robert Fogel speak about his book Time on the Cross. He and his co-author won Nobel Prizes for their research. In essence, there were two volumes: 1) the public narrative, and 2) the theory, mathematics, and research that caused them to reach their conclusion, which was that Blacks were economically better off before the Civil Way than after it. At the end of his presentation, he asked the audience if there were any questions.

A black reporter from a Columbus newspaper stood up and yelled: "You are a racist!" Dr. Fogel, a white man, asked if he had read the book. The reporter yelled: "I don't have to read the book. Your conclusion tells me you are a racist!"

At that moment, a black lady in the front row stood up, turned around and looked at the reporters and said: "Sit down, Sonny, you don't know what you're talking about and I resent the insults you are throwing at my husband!"
