> It could happen
In five years people will be saying that this article was prescient.
Back many years ago, I officiated high school football. I loved it, but my wife made me quit when our first child was born. What follows is a true story.
We were officiating a game one night where the home team was all white. The visiting team was nearly all black. All the officials on the field were white. We had no blacks in our association.
During a dead ball, while the offense was lining up to run a play, the head linesman (on the visiting side) threw his flag and blew the play dead.
The Referee goes over and says, “Whatcha got?”
HL says, “Unsportsmanlike conduct.”
Referee: “What did he do?”
HL: “I don’t want to say.”
Referee: “I’ve got to tell them something.”
HL: “He called me a ‘homo’”
Referee laughing: “Joe, he didn’t call you a ‘homo’, he called you a ‘homey’!!!”
The Referee proceeds to waive off the flag.
No telling how many times that story has been told by the local football officials association!
It’s most likely from something he did years ago...
