Pyrolysis.... Industrially very common. It's used for example, to make steel grade coke from anthracite coal, the Coker unit in oil refineries, coal gasification for synthetic natural gas and liquid fuels, wet air oxidation to destroy complex, hazardous organics, etc.

These researchers likely have petrochemical companies beating on their door to license the technology and hire them directly.
