Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) is facing ridicule online after exaggerating about her experience during the storming of the Capitol on January 6. Fighting tears during an Instagram-Live broadcast Monday night, Ocasio-Cortez described feeling traumatized, and said it “almost felt like a zombie movie or something.”
AOC also said that she felt threatened by a Capitol Hill Police officer who had come to secure the building and had banged on her office door. “I thought I was going to die,” Ocasio-Cortez emoted.
The socialist congresswoman said she hid inside her bathroom after her legislative director Geraldo Bonilla-Chavez told her to “hide, hide, run and hide.”
“And so I run back into my office,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “I slam my door. There’s another kind of like back area to my office, and I open it, and there’s a closet and a bathroom. And I jump into my bathroom.”

When it was pointed out that she was not even located inside the Capitol Building when the riot was taking place, critics accused her of being a “drama queen” and #AlexandriaOcasioSmollett trended on Twitter.
One Twitter user noticed that AOC’s story changed to explain why she didn’t go to the extraction point. Initially, she told people it was because she feared other Congressmen.
On Monday, she blamed the Capitol Police officer.

Conservative website Red State first pointed out that AOC was not actually in the U.S. Capitol Building during the riot.

Her office is in the Cannon House Building across the street from the Capitol Building. Moreover, GOP congresswoman Nancy Mace, whose office is two doors down from AOC’s, said that “insurrectionists never stormed our hallway.”

Ocasio-Cortez lashed out at conservative critics, accusing them of being “manipulative,” and claiming [inaccurately] that Trump supporters had planted bombs around her office. In fact, the pipe bombs were discovered at the offices of the Republican and Democratic national committees, blocks away. And while the FBI has not made any arrests yet, a potential suspect was seen on surveillance camera. The FBI said the person, who was carrying a backpack, “wore a gray hooded sweatshirt, a face mask and Nike Air Max Speed Turf sneakers in yellow, black and gray.”
This is the latest manipulative take on the right.
They are manipulating the fact that most people don’t know the layout the Capitol complex.
