For those who are focusing on Bennett’s political views:
Bennett is not just a WW 2 vet. He’s a combat veteran who was involved in heavy house-to-house fighting as the Allies pushed into Germany. Bennett later said that horrors he saw there shaped his political thinking.
So yeah, Bennett is a leftist. And those folks can do a lot of harm. But I think I’ll give the old infantryman a pass here.
I’ve never been all that interested in an entertainer’s political views. He’s a great singer and I’ve enjoyed his music through the years. He’s enriched the world with his art. Godspeed.
Then he is a bigger jerk than I imagined. He fought in a war to overcome other leftist loons and chose to be a leftist. Amazing disconnect.
And the leftists have destroyed the subject of one of his best known songs (San Francisco). Arguably one of the most beautiful cities in the world until it was overtaken by leftist thugs and ruined. I cant even visit it anymore, it makes me cry. He really is a jackass.
I think whenever we Freepers contemplate some artist who holds antithetical views to our own we have to approach their art separate from the artist if we are to enjoy anything about it. If we cannot for whatever reason it’s probably best to reject.
For Bennett it’s easy for me since while a few tunes of his were ok I was never a fan of his. The same problem of an artist being a completely awful person like say Woody Allen means I have to do that compartmentalization if I ever watch any of his movies. Some I can do that with and others no.
