A bit of derpish history.

Watched an episode of ID Discovery tonight about the monster, Ira Einhorn. Einhorn was an eco-celebrity - fawned over by the NY/Philly elite due to his progressive ecological, anti-establishment, counterculture club. He claimed to have originated Earth Day but others dispute that. He was a speaker at the first event in 1970.

He murdered his former girlfriend, Holly Maddux in 1977, and hid her body in a trunk buried in his apartment closet. He arose suspicion when her body fluids leaked and stained a downstairs neighbor's ceiling. 18 months after her disappearance, the police obtained a warrant and found Holly's body.

The police had additional evidence in his diary entries. He was arraigned and because of his "popularity" and elbow-rubbing with the elites, the judge was duped into giving him a crazy $40,000 bail, so with a 10 percent cash payment of $4,000, he was released on bail.

He escaped to Europe and remained free for about 17 years until Holly's family helped track him down in France. He was married to a wealthy Swedish woman (somehow he attracted wealthy do-gooders) and had a false name. In the meantime, he was found guilty by a Philidelphia court in absentia, so France would not release him to American custody because he had already been found guilty. A PA law change to allow new trials in such cases and pressure from Holly's family persuaded France to release him after three additional years of legal shenanigans in European courts.

After a new trial, he was found guilty then sentenced to life without parole. He maintained he was set up by the C_A.

He died in prison last April.

Here's the interesting part from wiki ...

Einhorn's initial alibi came into question when his neighbors began complaining about a foul smell coming from his apartment, which in turn aroused the suspicion of authorities. Eighteen months later, on March 28, 1979, Maddux's decomposing corpse was found by police in a trunk stored in Einhorn's closet. After finding the body, a police officer reportedly said to Einhorn, "It looks like we found Holly," to which he reportedly replied, "You found what you found." Einhorn's lawyer, Arlen Specter, negotiated bail of $40,000; he was released from custody after posting a bond of $4,000, or 10% of the $40,000. This was paid by Barbara Bronfman (née Baerwald), a Montreal socialite who married into the wealthy Bronfman family and met Einhorn through a shared interest in the paranormal. My insert here - she was the former daughter-in-law of Seagram's kingpin, Sam Bronfman and paid Einhorn's bail. Her former husband, Charles Bronfman is the former owner of the Montreal Expos baseball team.[5] During Einhorn's flight he was again aided by Bronfman, who continued to support him financially until 1988, when she read Steven Levy's damning book on Einhorn, The Unicorn's Secret.[5][12]

In 1981, just days before his murder trial was to begin, Einhorn skipped bail and fled to Europe. He lived there for the next seventeen years and married a Swedish woman named Annika Flodin. In Pennsylvania, as Einhorn had already been arraigned, the state convicted him in absentia of Maddux's murder in 1996. Einhorn was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
