You're right. Last time I researched it, coal provided about 50% of American's electric energy needs.

But now coal's down even below your estimate to 19%. Biggest single source is natural gas at 42%. Nuclear is almost 20%. Combined wind and solar are only 12.8%. Hydro-electric rounds it out at just under 6%.

So I'll rephrase my comment to say that electric cars are essentially natural gas, coal and nuclear powered cars.
