Most males in breeding combat tend to size each other up before committing themselves. If the non pictured male was “much larger”, I wonder if he simply couldn’t get away from the older male.

Maybe they did size each other up and the younger one thought the older one was “too old”.

That being said, the younger one chose poorly.
