40+ years ago, a child friend and I were in DC as 12 year-olds. We roamed the Capitol completely unmolested until we came across our congressman’s office.
We were curious what it looked like, so we opened the door, where we saw a secretary. She very pleasantly asked what we wanted and, surprised, we stuttered the town we were from.
She could have told us to go away, and we wouldn’t have minded, but she invited us in, and told us - ‘oh, the Congressman would love to meet you. can you wait a few minutes until he’s done with his meeting?’
So we did, and sure enough, we met with our Congressman and chatted for 10 minutes. Turns out he went to my high school…. That my FRiends, is representative democracy.
Is DC still like that?
“Completely unmolested until we came across our congressman’s office...”
(Was I the only one expecting a hair sniffer or something?)
