All mechanical distributors were a real compromise over ideal ignition function, especially when one’s vehicle’s engine compartment took in a wall of water from an adjacent 18 wheeler hitting a big puddle.

My dad had an old rusted out 1961 Dodge Lancer with the slant 6 he'd use whenever he had business to do in NYC, less likely to be stolen and another dent wouldn't have made a difference. He had to keep a couple of rags in the car because the distributor was so close to the right side wellwheel. Anytime it rained driving through a puddle would soak the distributor and stall it out.
