Japanese Farmers Plant Specific Strains of Rice to Grow Colorfully Illustrated Fields
![](https://returntonow.net/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/RiceFields_01.jpg)
Japanese farmers and artists have teamed up to turn rice paddies into art.
Nearly three decades ago, the people of Inakadate – a rural rice-growing village – were brainstorming ways to attract tourism and revitalize their economy.
When town officials saw a large group of elementary school kids planting a field of rice by hand, they had an idea – rice paddy art!
They paired up local artists with farmers, and enlisted thousands of volunteers to help plant seven different colors of rice into pre-plotted designs, like a giant color-by-number project.

I'm quickly arriving at the conclusion that THERE'S TOO MUCH TO LEARN!

That’s pretty cool. At first, by the picture, I thought that they were painting the rice, potentially ruining the harvest, but using different colors of rice makes more sense.

It’s almost Feb!
Time to get out the seed starting stuff.
I’m going to plant lavender seeds and they take 3-4 weeks to sprout. But I will start them Sunday.

I’ve been house bound most of this week with health and weather issues. I need to find time to weed and mulch this years garlic patch. The weather has been windy and wet and it appears to be more of it at this moment here on the shores of Humboldt Bay in Nor Cal...

Yesterday, winter finally hit here in central Conn. 4 days of it. Then, back to autumn on Tues.
Long-range forecast shows autumn thru 2/12. Spring starts 3/1.
So, if winter wants to return, there’s only a 16 day gap.

The Gardening section of my SHTF Knowledge Base has just passed the 500 title mark. I added enough to reach that milestone before stepping outside to enjoy a beautiful day that crept up into the low 70’s with lots of sunshine for the seedlings. I put them outside to harden them then bring them back in for the evening.
We aren’t allowed to leave town due to Covid restrictions but that doesn’t really affect us. We have everything we need right here.
