"After weeks of simmering tension, military television confirmed on Monday morning local time that the armed forces, known as the Tatmadaw, had declared a state of emergency for one year, and that the commander-in-chief, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, was taking over."

"The seizure of power came as a new session of parliament was due to open following elections last November which Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) easily won."

"The military, which has been claiming mass fraud in the election, took key NLD leaders into custody in the early hours. According to The Irrawaddy, a Thailand-based news outlet run by Burmese exiles, those detained included Suu Kyi – Burma’s de facto leader, but constitutionally barred from serving as president – her ally, President U Win Myint, and several lawmakers and members of the party’s central executive committee."
