Don’t forget the money. A significant reason women are upset is due to loss of athletic scholarships. Many women obtain an athletic scholarship and use it to obtain a good education. Women college sports are not a money generating operation. They receive athletic scholarships in order to be “fair” with men.
On the other hand, most of the men’s athletic scholarships go toward money making sports and most of the recipients are not as qualified or interested in obtaining a quality education.

there was no interest for it then, and except for very small group niches, there is hardly any mass interest for it now

consistent money drain to the tune of tens of millions of dollars a year, virtually no interest by anyone in it at all, not self supporting or even close to it
the nba subsidizes it tens of millions every year, gee the guys basketball group is funding the womens basketball, would not exist without it
