“In everyone’s life there’s a summer of ’42.”
Summer of '42 is a 1971 American coming-of-age comedy-drama film based on the memoirs of screenwriter Herman Raucher. It tells the story of how Raucher, in his early teens on his 1942 summer vacation on Nantucket Island (off the coast of Cape Cod), embarks on a one-sided romance with a young woman, Dorothy, whose husband has gone off to fight in World War II.
The film was directed by Robert Mulligan, and starred Gary Grimes as Hermie, Jerry Houser as his best friend Oscy, Oliver Conant as their nerdy young friend Benjie, Jennifer O'Neill as the mysterious woman with whom Hermie becomes involved.
Nantucket Island was too far modernized in 1970 to be convincingly transformed to resemble an early 1940s resort, so production was taken to Mendocino, California, on the West Coast of the US.Shooting took place over eight weeks, during which O'Neill was sequestered from the three boys cast as "The Terrible Trio," in order to ensure that they did not become close and ruin the sense of awkwardness and distance that their characters felt towards Dorothy.
The movie earned an Academy Award – Original Dramatic Score – for Michel Legrand.

I guess the subject matter was considered "racy" at the time. Especially for somebody like me who was just entering puberty.
The score is just beautiful, haunting. I play it on the piano, not too well, but I try. It’s my favorite. Recently read the book too.

It was the Summer of ‘42, I had just concluded my affair with Jennifer O’Neill. (she was too clingy)
That’s true,
She Still owes
Me Money!
Thanks.
Barbra got to play a role set in the same time period in “The Way We Were.” I never bought that Mr. Uber WASP would ever marry Ms. Uber Communist, but what do I know?
The right nostalgic movie at the right time for 40-50 something back then in ‘71, but I still related to it in my own way.
How I always wanted her......bad
My fantasy at 13
Now she lives near me and my wife knows her in passing
“Brazilian-American actress”.... haha. She left a mark big enough to determine your future. I see that she’s been an anti-abortion activist for years, unheard of in Hollywood.
“... Barbra Streisand being at the top of the list.”
Thank God for small favors, that Miss Gray got the part.
Married nine times
So pretty
Gorgeous.
Yes, she’s been married nine times, but has been with her current husband since 1996.
That’s an incredible fact
I would have put long odds on that
