Former ADT Technician Pleads Guilty To Hacking Home Security Cams In North Texas, Faces Up To 5 Years In Prison

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – A home security technician has pleaded guilty to repeatedly hacking into customers’ video feeds, announced Acting U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Prerak Shah.

Telesforo Aviles, a 35-year-old former ADT employee, pleaded guilty to computer fraud on Thursday, Jan. 21, in federal court.

“This defendant, entrusted with safeguarding customers’ homes, instead intruded on their most intimate moments,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Prerak Shah. “We are glad to hold him accountable for this disgusting betrayal of trust.”

“The defendant used his position of employment to illegally breach the privacy of numerous people. The FBI works with our law enforcement partners to thoroughly investigate all cyber intrusions and hold criminals accountable for their actions,” said FBI Dallas Special Agent in Charge Matthew J. DeSarno. “Cyber intrusions do not only affect businesses, but also members of the public. We encourage everyone to practice cyber hygiene with all their connected devices by reviewing authorized users and routinely changing passwords.”

According to plea papers, Aviles admits that contrary to company policy, he routinely added his personal email address to customers’ “ADT Pulse” accounts, giving himself real-time access to the video feeds from their homes.

In some instances, he claimed he needed to add himself temporarily in order to “test” the system; in other instances, he added himself without their knowledge.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Aviles took note of which homes had attractive women, then repeatedly logged into these customers’ accounts in order to view their footage for sexual gratification, he admits.

Plea papers indicate he watched numerous videos of naked women and couples engaging in sexual activity inside their homes.

Over a four and a half year period, Aviles secretly accessed roughly 200 customer accounts more than 9,600 times without their consent, he admits.

Aviles, who waived indictment and was charged via an information, now faces up to five years in federal prison.

Why would people put security cameras in places where they could be seen in “intimate moments”?

I don't think there is anything wrong with putting a security camera in the living room...

Some bad guy manages to get the front door open and gets into the house...The camera, in the living room, captures his face...

Why do people do it in the living room? Blame human emotions...Sometimes things get out of control...The man and woman decide to have some fun in the living room...They forget about the security camera...

Hmm, I just had an ADT technician over today installing an alarm system. I was thinking, if he had nefarious purposes, I’ve given him a lot of information and so forth. I’ll double check the system settings and account profile to make sure.

In California, a security alarm technician has to pass the fingerprint check by the licensing bureau...I am sure other states do the same thing...

This guy added his name to the accounts without permission...Make sure only your name is on the account...

I guess you never raised teenagers. Cams inside are the “If do invite a bunch of people over the house when I’m not home, I am going to catch you” threat. Lol

5 Years. Oooh! Boy, are they tough! This guy won’t do 6 months! I booked a guy in once who had been sentenced to 999 months for “Burglary” & “Criminal homicide”, meaning the guy was invloved in a burglary and someone was murdered during that crime. That figures out to around 83 years. This scumbag hadn’t even been in prison for 3 years, and here I was booking him in for “burglary”. He DIDN’T escape, they just let him go. During the booking, he’s cussing us and bragging about getting away with it before... This is just 1 incedent! I saw plenty like it!

I’d rather have a bottle in front of me, than a “frontal lobotomy”.

In my younger days... When the opportunity strikes and the desire... Oh! I can see very well why someone wouldn’t care about any security camera. Thankfully, in my day, they had no such cameras. AND! Of course, I never really did anything “inappropriate”. At least from my perspective at that time! I may be an “old fogy” and getting older with each passing day. But, I’m not such a fool not to know what the younger generation is driven to do. AND, I don’t blame them.

I used to put people in jail EVERY day who’s fingerprints were already in the system. The notion of having their fingerprints in the system does NOT preclude them from criminal conduct!

A few years ago, ADT was bleeding customers as they kept raising prices and did a shoddy job. The hits keep coming when customers are abused as part of company philosophy.

I checked that only my name is in the users list, and added my son. I also (I think) managed to set up the camera so that I am not constantly spying on my son as he moves around the house. While it's fun for now to tease him about the unforgettable and riveting video of him picking up a cat, that does get old fast. Except if he is at the front door, I can keep spying on him...

Prerak Shah, Telesforo Aviles, illiterate journalists: America has morphed into a foreign country.
