The Internet story you referenced was supposed to be the 13th amendment not the 12th, it was passed by Congress but never ratified by a sufficient number of states, and it was called the Titles of Nobility Amendment, which had nothing to do with boring lawyers from serving in office. Unfortunately, a lot of dumb people on the Internet don’t know that the title Esquire was part of the English mobility for the rank below that of knight long before it was applied to the legal profession. Others are just too lazy to look it up.
