Hank Aaron, the Hall of Famer slugger who starred with the Atlanta Braves, has passed away at the age of 86.

Just days after the MLB world mourned the loss of pitching icon Don Sutton, the game’s one-time home run king died on Friday morning in Atlanta.

The heartbreaking news, first reported by CBS 46, has since been confirmed by a close family member and a former Braves official.

Aaron got his start in baseball with the Indianapolis Clowns on the Negro League in 1951. Before long, he quickly caught the attention of MLB. After signing with the Braves, he spent the next few seasons in the minor leagues before making his MLB debut in 1954.

“I believe I read somewhere that if the foul pole was around when Ruth started his career he would’ve had about 75 more career homeruns.”

I don’t doubt it. He was an unbelievable athlete, so much better than virtually anyone else of his era or any subsequent one, that we almost cannot comprehend it. Imagine if the guy had taken care of himself, and had not been so ill in 1925, that would have netted him about 20 more homers, and extending his career by 3 more years would likely have added about another 75 homers. Let’s not even touch the fact that the guy barely started hitting until the 6th season of his career.

OK, let’s take your 75 foul pole homers, 20 more for 1925 and 75 more for staying healthy for 3 more years. 170 more homers, 884!!!!!! Oh, and the guy hit .342 for his entire career!

He also pitched in 10 different seasons (albeit the last 5 of those were just a couple of games), but NEVER had a losing season.

He was truly one of a kind.

Here are his career stats for anyone interested: http://www.baberuth.com/stats/
