But what this really proves is that Trump kicked ass in this election and they are frantic to stop the underlining movement same as the did with the tea party. There is no telling what this will morph into. Personally I'm not sure what part Trump will play.
It doesn't go through the SC. Chief Justice Roberts presides and has absolute authority to rule on issues such as whether the Senate can remove Trump from office months after the Comey/Brennan/Clapper/Obama coup and the fraudulent election removed Trump from office.
The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.
Anyone sane would rule that, since conviction requires ("shall") removal from office, the Senate cannot hold a trial on a person who is no longer in office. We all know how Roberts will rule though. The Constitution is so 18th/19th/20th century.
