I have a request for fellow sci-fi buffs. Back in 2015, I checked a book out of the local library, which was apparently the first of a series, begun post-2010, in which an American guy witnesses a UFO crash on a lonely road, ends up amidst a firefight and saves a woman who proves to be the empress of an interstellar empire. Of course, they fall in love and he joins her in space and has to try to protest her as a revolution breaks out.
I liked the book a lot, but couldn't find subsequent issues listed. It looked like the author had shifted to electronic publishing only from that point. I wasn't willing to start doing e-books at that point, so I let it drop.
I'm now looking for something new to read, but have been unable to find the book/series in question. Unfortunately, I can't remember the author or title (I'm getting older, ya know). I have also moved, so I can't go back to the library to see if I can find the one I checked out. I think the author's last name started with an M.
Anyway, if one of my fellow freepers could help me, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Well that book does not sound so hot as SciFi goes
If you want to read the last great American writer, look no further than Gene Wolf’s “Book of the New Sun”, “Litany of the Long Sun”, “The Book of the Short Sun”, and “The Urth of the New Sun”
Hard Scifi would be the Xeelee series by Stephen Baxter.
Might not be it, but sounds like “Apocalypse Troll” by David Weber. If it isn’t you should check it out.

Is the catalogue of the library online? Try searching ‘sci-fi’ and limit the search to books. Many libraries now even have pictures of the cover which should help, I imagine. Good luck, I know it’s frustrating to not be able to recall something like that.

Truly all of Gene Wolfe is great, if challenging to the point of befuddlement. Eventually I have to re-read ‘A Borrowed Man’ so I can then read the new posthumously released ‘Interlibrary Loan’.

Just about anything by Weber is worth reading.
Also a huge fan of John Ringo. I’d read a grocery list that he wrote, because someone would die by the end of it.
Bump for Thomas Covenant. Hard to make it all the way through the series though. There are some really depressing sections of it.
The 1st 3 books are all anyone needs to read.

I remember reading some sci fi novels when I was in jr/sr high that I really enjoyed and have not ever been able to recall the titles, only the plot.
I’ve always wanted to try to track them down and this at least, gives me a starting point.
