Petersburg is known as "Alaska's Little Norway," and the town takes it's heritage seriously. Like many waterfront towns, the economy is based on tourism and fishing. The town lies south of the capital of Juneau, but like most most southeast Alaska towns, can only be accessed by air or sea.

Like many waterfront towns, the economy is based on tourism and fishing.

The economy here is based on fishing and not much else now that the logging industry is gone. There was very little tourism going on even before the pandemic, and that was limited to hunting and fishing guides and lodges to which PSG is the nearest airport.

For that reason, Petersburg has not taken the economic hit that larger towns like Sitka and Ketchikan have. There are no restaurants, tourist activity centers, rental car fleets, whale watching boats or tour guides to go out of business in Petersburg. What matters here are the fish counts.

After thirty years in Honolulu where the whole state economy lives or dies on the visitor count, I really love living in a town that depends on producing food rather than fleecing tourists for it's livelyhood.
