An upside down ensign is an international distress signal. That means it is meant to summon help in an emergency.
If it becomes a political protest statement by popular usage (And it looks like it will) it will no longer be useful as a distress signal because it will be ignored like any other political sign.
This all may be meaningless to you. I know nothing of your situation or experience. But I live on a cruising boat, currently in port with about 700 other boats. Showing an upside down ensign would have harbor officials and neighboring captains and crew knocking on the hatch to find out what the emergency is.
There are other ways to make a political statement. Fly the Trump flag, the Gadsden flag, the Bonny Blue flag, the Whiskey Rebellion flag or, as I plan to do, the Sons of Liberty flag.
