The freight RRs are still over regulated.
From what I see most rail cars spend most of their time sitting around.
The ‘net should provide a model to promote faster packet transport and switching for the rail cars.
Remote automated couplers should be invented and implemented.
Autonomous locos would be arguably more easily implemented than autonomous trucks.
I do love to to watch Railroad operations on occasion.
Private railcars tacked onto Amtrak trains are a fun way to go.

Absolutely true about overregulation. One of the most damaging ones was the rule where firemen were retained after steam traction was retired in favor of diesel-electric, who basically got paid to sit on the other side of the locomotive cab.
Modern overregulation drove the consolidation of most railroad companies into five big Class 1 entities, thus eliminating competition and creating an oligarchy. (There were 33 Class 1 railroads in the 1980s.)
