In 2016, the electors of Michigan voted for PDJT but by your definition, they would have illegal as as they were sent up by the governor and not the state legislature as required by the Constitution.

YES they were. The Michigan legislature SHOULD NOT ABDICATE the powers given to them by the constitution. A lot of this mess we are in right now came as a result of legislators not following the law and ABDICATING their responsibilities.
In the case of 2016 however, the governor and the legislature were IN HARMONY. Which means that BY A HAPPY COINCIDENCE, even if the legislature did their job as they should, Trump would still be elected in the state.
In 2020, IT WAS DIFFERENT. The legislature and the governor were NOT IN AGREEMENT on the electors to choose but the legislature ABDICATED their authority.
But wrong is still wrong (2016 or 2020 ) and we have to insist that every state follow the law for 2024.
