And separate it from a large part of their voters! Maybe McConnell didn’t really express that opinion, but he has said some other things publicly that are pretty bad. I usually support voting for the lesser of evils, any Republican over a Democrat — and doubt that a new party will have a chance (not if Trump supporters can’t win in primaries with presumably more conservative voters than in the general election). If we’ve reached the point at which we can’t trust elections, though — or the courts, or the news media, or the educational system — it may be time to give up on them.

Maybe it’s time to resort to civil disobedience (though unlike the situation with the passive resistance of the early civil rights struggle, the federal government and news media won’t be on the side of the protesters, and will allow the police and groups like Antifa to attack them with impunity). Maybe it’s time to push for “sanctuary areas” where the current regime’s orders will be ignored. Or to demand secession if the rights of the opposition aren’t respected.

Let’s hope there are some intermediate steps between here and civil war. I don’t advocate one. If millions of otherwise peaceful persons — as nearly everyone on the right is — turn to violence, it will be a terrible thing for both sides (nothing comparable to the illegal but relatively mild occupation of the Capitol).

That will be the last resort, of course, but if the regime and its oligarchic cohorts — take away free speech — and insist on persecuting the opposition, it can happen (if not open confrontation, widespread and continuing terrorist attacks — this country panics if a handful of persons launch attacks, e.g., the couple of snipers in Virginia decades ago. How could it manage hundreds of thousands of them?) Don’t they realize that in trying to crush the opposition they are playing with fire?

The red states are the sanctuaries. Red states' governors, attorney generals and legislatures, must start ignoring the Federal Government and especially the USSC, since it abdicated it's responsibility to hear Texas' case against the states which failed to ensure fair elections.
