Edelweiss, Edelweiss
Every morning you greet me
Small and white, clean and bright
You look happy to meet me
Blossom of snow may you bloom and grow
Bloom and grow forever
Edelweiss, Edelweiss
Bless my homeland forever
Bless my homeland forever.
Germans have a peculiar habit of choral singing in pubs, once they’ve had a few. More than once in my few short sojourns there I was treated to impromptu renderings of Edelweiss in some Ratskeller or other. Which is ironic since the song is actually an American tin-pan-alley original from about 1960. They like it and they sing it anyway. In German of course.
