My question is why? What’s in it for any business to lose customers? For any news outlet to lose viewers? For any publicly traded company to tick off their investors? For that matter, what’s in it for investors to excuse this fiduciary misbehavior?

Does it really boil down to hatred? I think that answer is too easy. Is there a cost/benefit analysis that predicts a large payout down the line? Large enough to justify losing half your customers?

Used to be that performers, as a rule, tried to stay apolitical. There was never any sense in alienating half your audience. What’s changed?
