“But the talk of secession comes up only by the party that has lost its political power.”
Those who fail to learn from history are bound to repeat it! Your example of those in the Revolutionary war is spot on. The same happened after the Civil War. A large contingent of southerners left the country for places all over the world! Mexico and Brazil were probably the most frequent points of escape. Many returned after a few years, but many also stayed. In particular, they remained in Brazil. They founded a city called Americana which exists still to this day.
They were called “Confederados.” You can read about them here: https://bit.ly/3oxwMsq. You can view them here: https://bit.ly/2Xv7HCB. (Warning: This may be disturbing to some — but not all!).
FROM THE LINCOLN PROJECT: https://bit.ly/2LGST0M
“The United States Senate should immediately vote to convict and remove him from office. Any Member of Congress who refuses to do so should be considered a co-conspirator.”
The bottom line is the victors write the history and define the terms of the settlement. It seems we are seeing the beginning of those terms now with “banning” and “lists of Trump supporters.” That’s life.
Thanks for the history lesson on the aftermath of the Civil War; I really had no idea about this.
Another reality that is lost on the vichy republicans. For all their talk of a "peaceful transfer of power" from the left, this sort of behavior is not what you inflict on an opposing party after an election. It is what you do after a war.
Mainstream republicans are in total denial; They have purposely avoided every opportunity to stop this, even to the point of collaborating with it in order to convince themselves it is no big deal.
They fail to grasp that they will translate from being useful allies, to an annoying but necessary evil, eventually becoming the final enemy to vanquish.
